“My Website Sucks!” Waaaahhh!

Wow….feeling that bad about your website?
Does it REALLY suck, or are you just bored with it? Lost interest and not nurturing it?

A website can be some what of a child. It does need care. You have to “feed” it, care for it and spend time with it.

Let me explain.

Many….and I mean MANY website owners contact me wanting to talk about how their site is lacking traffic or that they aren’t seeing the response they expected. The first thing I ask is….”How old is your site?”

If your site is brand new….you really can’t expect overnight success. Websites just don’t typically work that way. You have to “build” on it each day like a humongous Lego tower.

Building on it means adding content. EVERY DAY!!! You over there rolling your eyes thinking….”Yeah yeah…I’ve heard content is king and all that…but I wrote a good article last week.”

That’s GREAT! Congrats! That’s a good start. But with nothing more to “crawl”, the search engines have nothing more to index or have no reason to come back frequently. In other words…YOUR missing the damn virtual boat!”

You’ve got to make the commitment.

There are some days where I just don’t feel like writing anything. I don’t even want to talk to anyone…let alone try and write some fabulous (or even semi-fabulous) article or post on whatever. On those days…..you could ask me to write about Patrick Dempsey, or the refrigerator scene in ’9 1/2 Weeks’…or hell….you could ask me to write about ME and Patrick Dempsey doing our own refrigerator scene similar to the one in ’9 1/2 Weeks’….

Can I just say I’m partial to this movie because I wrote an entire final thesis paper on it my senior year in college for my advanced film writing class.

::long pause::

Maybe that’s what I should have written about today. Wow….me and Patrick Dempsey half naked on the floor, blind-folded…..eating strawberries. And if I’m going to go full fiction – give me the body that Kim Basinger had in that movie as well! LOL

::Gets up and goes into the living room to find her copy of ’9 1/2 Weeks’. Makes note to watch it for the 100th time REAL soon::

OK…well…I’ll make a mental note to save that topic for my new blog, ‘KellysOMGFantasies.com’.
(Note to my husband: You are the love of my life…..I promise!)

Back to you and YOUR content…

There will be days you don’t feel like writing. What I do on these days….is I research. I drift around the internet, sometimes using StumbleUpon and just read. I make notes of topics that interest me. Whether it be topics of home based business or celebrity or health….I just jot things down.

After researching and having about 4 cups of coffee….I go ahead and start drafts. I just start typing….on whatever topic I’ve picked. I have no expectations of finishing it….but it gives me little “jump off” points on days when I am just blank on what to write about. These little beginner drafts allow me to start without having to do it all from scratch.

I have MANY drafts. Some are over a year old. I try to keep 25 drafts in the hopper at all times. They are helpful in that they can sometimes just fit your mood for that day. Writing becomes easier because you have a little intro to get you going.

So definitely keep that in mind. It’s not professional….”Oh I Am So Full of Myself” advice….it’s just something THIS writer does.

If content isn’t your issue…and you still think your site sucks….maybe a re-design is the answer. I used to do all my own design work. But you know what….a REAL professional designer is worth their weight in GOLD!! GOLD I tell ya!

Find websites you like, look and see who the designer is….and approach that designer on what you would like.

Those of you wanting a “whole” site like I talked about earlier….the dorks that want to rip off someone’s design, content and everything….DON’T DO THAT. That makes you a horribly nasty person that probably doesn’t wipe their butt and eats their own boogers. (See for example this chick that totally ripped off my site MoneyMakingMommy.com – AdChilli.info. She even mentions my MoneyMakingMommy message baords on her index page!! Total Dirty Butt-Booger Eating RIP OFF!! Time to call the attorney!)

In the end….
Your website doesn’t suck. It probably just needs YOU to step up and do what you have to do. It won’t write itself, design itself or rank in the search engines itself. Don’t envy others that “seem” to have it all in the internet world – let them inspire you.

In my opinion, the internet is all about inspiring.

I’m inspired every day by what I see and read on the internet. Both the virtual world and the real world hold everything you need to make an UN-sucky website. Live your life, let your creativity run wild….

Even if you know nothing on a topic, jot down that you want to write about that topic eventually. Always keep things feeding into your content pipeline. Even if it’s just a sentence, a title, a topic – it may prove valuable on down the road.

Writing in YOUR own original voice is my greatest wish for you. It’s my absolute best advice. Stealing content, borrowing content….stealing web designs, layouts and images….that crap will come back and bite you. You want to talk about a sucky website…rip somebody off.

Be yourself. Be genuine.
And be cool. Relax – putting pressure on yourself will put writers block in full swing.

All you have to be – is you.

Plus….you don’t want to be a dirty butt-booger eater, do you?

Now…where is my dvd of ’9 1/2 Weeks’!!?
