Being a Stay At Home Mom Doesn’t Mean Baggy T-Shirts and Sweatpants!

by HomeBasedBusinessMom on August 11, 2009

HBBM-Moms-FashionThere is a common misconception about us work at home and stay at home moms.
And I for one…am very tired of it.

Do we wear sweatpants and t-shirts?? Yes…we do. But I’ll be damned if it’s going to be our stereotypical uniform.
I don’t always wear crappy stuff when I’m at home.
I DO put on some cover up and powder….some blush. Even mascara.
I DO brush my teeth and fix my hair.

For some reason all the moms and women that work “outside” the home – think us “stay at homes” just lounge around in some type of Garanimal matching sweatsuit get-up or baggy t-shirts and frumpy pants or something?? Or maybe we just stay in our PJs all day??? Hardly.

Just because we’re home doesn’t mean we don’t lunch with friends, exercise or know what the hell is going on in the world. We do. Thank you very much.

We get up…we exercise, we take showers, and put on make up and we love fashion just as much as the next person.
Sure…we are cleaning the house, doing laundry, fixing dinner, picking up kids and helping with homework – but we also look good doing it!!

So next time you decide to have a preconceived notion about what us “stay at home” moms *look* like….
You better look again. We could be that hot mom in the grocery store with the cute chunky Naot sandals, the Brighton handbag and oh so pretty JJill top and Chico cropped platinum jeans on. Ya never know!!

Not that it takes money and highfalutin labels for us “stay at home” supposed slobs to look chic. Hell, I can grab something at Target and look like a fashion plate. It is THAT easy.

It’s more the insinuation that we don’t care, or we have no life other than changing dirty diapers, folding clothes and baking cookies. WRONG.

We’re more than minivans and strollers. More than aging teenage drama queens from the 80′s wishing we back in the “day” of ‘Pretty in Pink’ and ‘The Breakfast Club’. I honestly believe…work at home moms and stay at home moms are the only glue keeping this friggin country together with some kind of decency and order to the mayhem. Some small semblance of tradition and integrity….of family and what’s important.

So before you go chocking all us “moms” that stay at home up as fat, bored losers that can’t even put together a decent outfit….you better think again….or you just might just get a swift kick is butt with a really cute pair of pumps just purchased at Ann Taylor.

You go girl! I am so glad someone said what I was thinking. I have been a ” stay at home mom ” forever. Like you I beleive that we are the fiber that holds the rest of the world together. I have worked outside the home and trust me it is easier. When you deal with children and all the family stuff on top of working at home it takes someone with true grit. The emotional aspect of making decisions where your children are concerned is very difficult. It is much easier in my opinion to make corportate decisions, though hard it doesn’t require the emotions it does when dealing with ones family. For the most part you can walk away from the corporate world. But when you work from home you do it all.

No we are not in PJs all day. However sometimes I think this would be a plus over some of the attire that I have seen in the workplace.

So onward and upward the world is our oyster.
